Gil Hanse has partnered with Heritage Links to lead a comprehensive restoration of Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City, Calif. The restoration began in October 2021 and is slated to finish this October.

The plan was to restore the course as closely as possible to its original state from the 1930s, and while they were able to largely complete that goal, not every hole was able to return to its original state.

“We were able to put the holes back as [original architect Alister] Mackenzie created them. But we couldn’t do that everywhere,” said Jim Wagner, Hanse’s partner. “The property had undergone too much radical change through the years.”

The project rebuilt all 18 greens, created a 36,000 square foot Himalayas-style putting course, added new short-game practice areas and a turf research nursery, refurbished 150,000 square feet of bunkering, restored and expanded all 18 tee complexes, moved the practice facility from one end of the property to the other, and installed a two-wire irrigation system using flexible, no-leak HDPE piping.

Landscapes Unlimited has begun the process of restoring the 18-hole Osprey Meadows Golf Course at Tamarack Resort, 90 miles north of Boise, Idaho.

The firm is working with the original course architects to enhance playability and variety by reimagining several holes. In addition, Landscapes is taking charge of the grassing and seeding, as well as irrigation on the new holes. The course layout will remain largely the same, but a 19th hole will also be installed, a par-3 “gambler’s” hole where players can settle wagers.

The course—which has won various awards over the years from publications such as GOLF Magazine, Golf Digest and Golfweek—will remain closed until the summer of 2023, while the driving range will re-open later this summer.

“This is another historic moment at Tamarack,” said Scott Turlington, President of Tamarack Resort.  “It’s not often that you get a second chance to make a first impression, but we have that rare opportunity with the return of Osprey Meadows.”

Westchester Hills Golf Club in White Plains, New York recently wrapped up a $3.5-million renovation that began in October 2021. The club also completed a $1-million pool renovation.

The renovations touched multiple areas of the course to improve functionality and increase visual appeal. Renowned course architect Rees Jones led the renovation and made such changes as expansions to greens, fairways and chipping areas—20,000, 30,000 and 50,000 square feet, respectively—new tees; XGD drainage in all greens; upgraded and renovated bunkers with new sand and capillary concrete drainage; 10 acres of new sod throughout the course; and a brand-new irrigation system consisting of 12 miles of pipe, 1,250 sprinkler heads and 54 quick connects. Jones also designed a new 6,700-square-foot practice putting green that’s surrounded by fire pits and farm fencing.

“Our design was to liven a classic-style golf course while upgrading the course’s playability and maintenance standards,” said Jones. “We fully expect the golf course’s new features to take the Hills golf experience to a new level in the private club community.”
