Every year, "Southern Life" magazine selects houses in southern cities to showcase interior design and home style concepts. The house named "Creative House" appeared in a special issue and was open to the public to visit. This year, for the first time in history, the selected residence was in Bluegrass State.

“We are a member of their Southern Living Custom Builders Program,” explained Jimmy King, co-owner of Artisan Signature Homes in Prospect. "They selected about 100 builders from all over the country, (and) we have been a member of them for about 15 years. Over the years, we have been lobbying them to let Idea House come to Louisville.... They finally Called and said,'We think we are ready to come to Kentucky. We want to do this.'"

Atlanta-based architect Brandon Ingram drew inspiration from historic buildings in southern New England and coastal areas to design the 2021 Idea House, a colonial Greek Revival style house. The house was built by Artisan Signature Homes at The Breakers at Prospect. It has four bedrooms, four bathrooms and two powder rooms. It covers an area of 5,170 square feet and is called "Riverbend" by Southern Living.

King added that the core team of Idea House also includes Nashville interior designer Sarah Bartholomew and local landscape designer Josh Meyers. "We got together in multiple (weekly) Zoom conference calls just to get the right level of detail," he said. "Our goal is to make sure we position this house in a certain way...real use of the river view."

The residence is located in one of the limited prime lots nearby, with uninterrupted views of the Ohio River. The room in the house that provides the best vantage point is also the king's favorite.

"The room upstairs leads to the porch on the second floor," he described. "When you walk up the steps and look to the left, you will see the view, the room is open with beautiful beams.... You There are French doors, and you have a porch on the second floor with sweeping views of the Ohio River. That may be my favorite room."

Jin told the Courier Daily: “(The) plot leads to a four-panel fence outside. Behind it is a nature reserve, so it will never be built on it. This is (the) outlook on life.”

In addition to the stunning scenery, the backyard also has an outdoor kitchen, pavilion and dog house, which looks like a mini version of a real family. There is even a swing hanging from a 125-year-old oak tree.

Inside, multiple hidden doors merge into the wall, as do the hidden desks built into the library bookcases. The layout of the room itself allows it to be used for study, work, or intimate gatherings with a few friends. This is a flexible space, much like the green studio on the opposite side of the house.

"(It) is nothing more than a multifunctional room," Jin said, adding that the inclusion of this space is a result of the current climate. As more and more people work from home and blur the line between business and family life, the centrally located multifunctional room becomes meaningful. "You can go in and call Zoom, kids can go in, there are lockers, (and) a table. This is a really great room, right next to the kitchen."

Every aspect of Idea House is well thought out and executed deliberately, from detailed decoration work and panelling to hand-painted floors and no drains.

"We have drainage systems around the house," Jin said. "When the water runs out, it enters the drainage system, and then we use a pipe to drain it. Some people think that the gutter is unattractive (and) do not want to attract (their) attention.... The gutter slabs around the house have crowns The shape, this is a nice little detail."

He added that visitors often fail to understand the number of details that can be seen throughout the home, and he urges visitors to take the time to truly appreciate these unique elements.

"I will tell (people) to pay close attention to all the details of the pruning work," he said. "All of this is hand-painted, giving people an ancient feel and appearance. This is our goal: to have a timeless design and an ancient feel, as well as new buildings."
