It is not uncommon to want to lay 120V electric wires underground. You may want to power your shed, workshop or garage. Another common use is to power lamp posts or electric door motors. In either case, you should be aware of some underground wiring requirements to meet most current building codes. We show you how to install underground electrical wires from one location to another.

The first question we are always asked is "How deep do we bury wires or cables?" This is a good question. The answer is that it depends on what wire you are using and whether you run it inside the conduit. Since most people ask this question to satisfy their specific desire for maximum burial depth, let's start there. According to the buried depth of the underground wire during installation, we have the following options:

If you want to use metal EMT conduit instead of PVC, you can. Usually, we use gray 3/4 inch PVC for single wire. In addition, although the required burial depth listed above should usually be accurate, please check the local building codes first. Before you start, you need to be absolutely sure that you meet the regulations. When supplying electricity to remote areas underground, we usually prefer to use PVC conduits. In the long run, this can provide you with more protection than directly buried cables.

Finally, just understand your options and take the safest or easiest route according to your situation. If you can leave without a conduit, and the wiring is located in an area that will not hinder future excavation, then directly buried cables may be best. If you are running in the middle of the yard, PVC or metal conduit seems to be a better choice-even if it is a bit overkill.

We did not provide a large number of steps to install underground wires. Installing wiring or conduit requires a lot of work-but there are not many detailed instructions.

Don't forget to plan ahead and call before digging. You don’t want to hit any pipes, wires, sewers, or anything else buried in the ground. In most cities, they will check your property for free within a day or two, and when you call. Marking key lines with signs before you start can indeed save you a lot of trouble and trouble. Don't skip this step!

We dug many trenches with shovel. If you cherish your time, please don't do it. If you have someone you really want to torture, or you only walk a few feet, then use a ditching shovel. However, if you need to use buried cables to travel long distances, we recommend that you rent a trencher.

In most places, you can rent a 24-inch trencher for less than $200 a day. If you only need a few hours, you can even pay less. It saves you countless hours and troubles, so if you can afford it, please buy it at your local tool rental shop.

Using a trencher, plan your route and dig trenches where you plan to lay directly buried cables or PVC pipes.

From the starting point (for example, your electrical panel) to the end of the run, cut your exit and entrance holes.

It facilitates the use of so-called PVC conduit outlet bodies (LB).

These make it easy to feed wires into buildings (source or destination garages or shops). You only need to use two screws to remove the board and feed the wires as needed, without worrying about making a right-angle sharp turn at the entrance.

Pro tip: If you need to bend to hold the pipe against the house, garage or workshop, use a heat gun to bend the PVC pipe.

In many cases, you only need to pass the cable through a minimum of PVC conduit. If you want, you can use metal fish tape, or even draw the wire through the pipe by vacuum, and then use it to stretch the wire.

After pulling the wire, connect to the electrical panel and complete the conduit fitting. This includes fixing the plate to the outlet body of the PVC conduit. Test your running and pat yourself on the back to do a great job!

There is nothing better than providing much-needed electricity to a shed or garage. Enthusiastically attack such projects and obtain benefits. As always, if things seem to be beyond your professional level, please consult or use a licensed electrician.

Thank you! I'm about to get electricity from my workshop (this weekend) to a tree house 70 feet away. This is a good review. The tip of the heat gun used to bend the duct is a wonderful technique.
