Pilot project for the application of internal coatings to pipelines in Austria

A pilot project carried out by Wolftank Adisa and local partner RTI Austria in Austria showed that its coatings can be successfully applied to natural gas pipelines.

Wolftank's extensive product portfolio is the result of years of innovation, research and development. The company has long-term experience in petrochemical applications and can handle extremely challenging conditions such as high pressure and extremely corrosive environments.

With a highly innovative approach, Wolftank is able to provide excellent solutions for on-site and refurbished pipe coatings, even if these pipes have very sharp curves.

Project scope

The pilot project consists of two parts implemented at two different locations. The total length of the pipeline is about 200m and the diameter is about 200mm:

Greater challenges are especially related to surface treatment by sandblasting and high-precision robotic lining equipment to apply a specific coating thickness on the entire pipeline.

It uses an innovative robotic cell that can enter the inside of the pipeline and coat it while being externally controlled by the software.

The sophisticated equipment consists of two tubes (one for component A and one for component B), a pump and a compressor. The components in the tube are finally mixed and spread over the entire surface.

The software also includes a control panel that can calculate all application conditions (temperature, flow, thickness, etc.) and monitor parameters. This includes flow rate, coating thickness (0'4 mm in this example) and performance speed. In addition, it has a camera that can perfectly display the entire coating process from the inside of the pipe.

The quality of Wolftank coatings, together with innovative equipment, achieved the goal of updating all pipelines. And this is only possible within a few days.

All pipes are now in perfect condition, including some particularly difficult areas, such as some of them at 90° angles. Due to the flexibility of the robot and its rotation, these challenging parts also get the necessary coatings correctly.

In addition, Wolftank Adisa applied a 3-layer corrosion protection system on the outside, with a total thickness of at least 225 microns. For the base layer, the company used Adapur HS, a primer that is particularly suitable and known for its heavy corrosion protection.

In short, the project is the best evidence that high quality and technology means a real solution for any type of facility. This is the foundation of Wolftank Adisa, and this is the foundation of its success, not only tanks, but also pipelines!
