By the weekend after Thanksgiving, the Wonderland Christmas Tree Farm near Pea Ridge had cut down a large number of Christmas trees and brought them home!

Approximately 2,500 trees were felled, bagged and loaded onto cars and SUVs, trucks, and taken home five days before the farm's seventh year of operation in Wandouling.

"This is crazy," Gilbaby exclaimed.

Jill and her husband Martin Babb own and operate the forest farm they started when they moved to the Pea Ridge area in 2009.

The Christmas Tree Farm attracted customers from Arkansas, Missouri and Oklahoma, some of them even from Little Rock.

Babb said that this year's turnover on the weekend after Thanksgiving was almost twice the turnover during the same period in 2019.

In 2019, Martin and Jill Babb sold approximately 2,350 Christmas trees. Gil said that in the first five days of business in 2020, they sold 2,138 vehicles. This year, they have sold nearly 2,500 trees.

As the trees planted by Babbs in 2009 began to mature, the farm opened in 2015.

“We decided to close today for a week in order to leave enough trees for Saturday’s sales,” she said, explaining that the farm will open on Saturday, December 4th and will still host Feliz Navi Dog and Lantern Night on Saturday.

Whether they are open on Sundays will depend on whether there are trees available for sale.

Mrs. Babu said that the farm brought about 700 Fraser fir trees, and only about 12 remained, and they were 7 to 8 feet tall. She said that they wanted to buy Fraser with two trucks, but the supplier could only deliver one truck, and even all suppliers except three suppliers (one of which was Wonderland) stopped selling.

"I just like the Fraser," Jill said of the tree, boasting of its strong branches and soft needles. She said that the experience of cutting trees is very attractive to families with children, and Fraser did not grow well in Arkansas. The Fraser shipped by Babbs is from North Carolina and the trees are well hydrated.

Students in many areas work there on weekends, shaking and bagging, and then loading them onto the top of cars, SUVs and trucks.

A variety of trees-Virginia pine, long, soft needles, easy to decorate for children; Scots pine with short, sharp needles; and Leyland cypress-available.

On the farm, the trees purchased start from 5 to 6 feet. "Marketable trees" lanes are marked with colorful price tags. Available species include Scots Pine, Virginia Pine, White Pine, Leland Cypress, and Turkish Fir in 2021. Each tree has its unique characteristics. Some are aromatic, some needles are very long, and some needles are very short. According to reports, Leyland is good for allergy sufferers.

"We still have 5 to 6 feet of trees around the farm for people who want to cut down smaller trees," she said. "The tall tree runs so fast."

Depending on the type of tree and the weather, evergreen trees can grow one to two feet per year.

"We will not sell them until they are at least six years old," she said. "We will never own trees that are 10 feet and 11 feet or higher again because they are cut too quickly."

"I really don't know the catalyst for all this," she said. "Of course, covid is a nail in the coffin, because last year everyone wanted to do something safe and fun outdoors."

The farm provides bow saws and trolleys to help fell and transport trees.

"We have everything except gloves," Martin said. He made tree carts by cutting and welding deer carts for customers to transport trees out of the field.

Customers bring the trees back to the shed, where their trees are placed in the corrals, and then the dead needles are removed in the "tree shaker". The tree was bagged by employees and placed on the customers' cars or trucks, many of whom were students from Peto Ridge. Babb built a 16-inch wooden box for the vehicle to park between them, and used a string to pass through the PVC pipe, thread the string through the branches of the car, and tie it to it.

Nearby is a gift shop on the front porch with a Santa’s letter box and wooden soldiers. There are smiling faces of customers and employees looking at decorations, Christmas cookies, wreaths, children’s Christmas costumes and various gifts for sale.

Some food vendors offer snacks, including The Sugar Shack, Aunt Susie's Gourmet Kettle Popcorn, and It'll Do Coffee.

The Babus have been married for 40 years and have four adult children and 17 grandchildren, many of whom work on the farm with them. This year, several granddaughters worked in wreath sheds and gift shops.

A note on the forest farm’s social media page stated: “Due to the increase in sales so far this year, we have to modify our schedule. Please note that from now on, we will only be open on weekends, waiting for the supply of trees. We may be able to supply it after next weekend. It's closing. Thank you to everyone who has visited us so far this year. We were shocked!"

The farm was named the 21 best Christmas tree farms for family outings by Country Life magazine, and was named one of the top ten Christmas tree farms in Arkansas in 2019 by Best Things to do in Arkansas.
